Tonight we talked over the syllabus and the course calendar - and began thinking about what it is that defines literature as literature. You were introduced to your textbook = Electronic Literature Collection Volume 1 and I invited you to spend some time looking through the texts available in the collection.
As discussed in class, the texts you read for this class are available online - but you may want to buy a copy of the collection along with N. Katherine Hayles discussions of electronic literature in a material form. It is available at Amazon. If you buy the "book" you will have the works + the software to drive them on a CD.
For next class read Hayles classification of different forms of electronic literature, Electronic Literature, What is it? - up through not 67 - where Hayles begins to write about criticism and interpretation.
Also - browse through the different electronic lit texts to make sure your computer can handle the reading requirements for this course (and that you can download the necessary software).
